we also have one of the Xerox 850dp free color printers. I installed it 2
months ago.

I used the normal internal nic that came with the printer (did not buy a
jetdirect card or external box) and connected it just fine to the network
and the HP3000 using npconfig. I have it setup to print normal landscape
and portrait, compressed landscape and portrait.

After spending a week with Xerox tech support, I found (or was told) that
the printer was designed as a postscript printer, not a PCL based printer.
It has limited PCL capabilities, and when printing in PCL mode from the
HP3000, it drops from 14ppm to 2ppm (plain text mode). Xerox says that is
normal PCL print speed for this printer.
