Fellow Listers:
Despite our sadness and anger (and I have been one of the most vociferous
ranters) we all knew this was coming. It was just a question of when. Yes,
I think most of us agree it has come earlier than necessary, because HP
didn't try to promote MPE, but market forces were probably insurmountable in
the long term.
As many have pointed out, the HP e3000 will be supported (by HP) for five
years, and for many years beyond by third parties, so our world hasn't come
to an end. Having watched the presentation narrated by George Stachnich on
HP's web site at http://www.hp.com/products1/mpeixservers/future/index.html
I must say that I am pleased and grateful that HP has committed to further
enhancement of the product line over the next two years. I think most
companies would have dropped whatever product more abruptly. The real shame
is that the industry as a whole has championed a set of operating systems
that are unnecessarily complex, unfriendly and easy to break. When you have
devoted much of your career to one of the best operating systems in the
business, it's frustrating that so many people just don't get it.
