     oops...made a boo boo. In 9.x, there's no need to edit /etc/netbsdsrc.
But the hosts_to_named command has to be run in /etc (so that the
named.boot file is in /etc), not /etc/named.data. In any case,
/etc/named.data was created so that the nameserver files don't get
chucked into the /etc directory which would make it very messy.

these are the steps to create a dns on a hp-ux 10.x box. Login as root, and do
the following (remember that my training is in MPE!):

1. Create the hosts file in /etc/hosts
2. edit the /etc/resolv.conf file to point to the correct nameserver
3. mkdir /etc/named.data
4. cd /etc/named.data
5. hosts_to_named -d [domain name] -n [network number] -b /etc/named.boot
6. type named to start the name server

In addition, you will need to enable the nameserver from
/etc/rc.config.d/namesvrs.
1. vi /etc/rc.config.d/namesvrs
2. change the NAMED=0 to NAMED=1

For 9.x, the process is the same except that the file to change NAMED=0 to
NAMED=1 is /etc/netbsdsrc (I think!).

To kill the named daemon, you would use sig_named kill. This would kill your
name server if you want to make changes. The command named would be used to
start it again.

On the HP3000, you will need to edit the RESLVCNF.NET.SYS and put the
nameserver's (HP9000) IP address in there. That should do the trick.

Please do.

Thanks in advance.
