Strangely anough, glance indicates that ftp is waiting for a MSG when the lan is configured with autosense off.  If I bypass the switch (3Com model 3C16792A) the problem goes away.

The switch is supposed to be auto sense for duplex mode.  My guess is that the switch expects a certain signal from the HP3000 which it does not deliver and hence cannot moved to FULL duplex.  That would explain that I get about half the throughput I would expect.

I guess I would have to move to more expansive switches that one could force the duplex mode.
