All questions regarding performance issues are met with nebulous and
meaningless responses or my personal favorites:

"It shouldn't make a difference"
"Why do you want to know?  Performance is our area of concern, not yours"
"That shouldn't do that...try uninstalling and reinstalling, if that doesn't
do it, you may have to reformat the hard drive and reinstall"

I don't believe they truly know their trade and are afraid to say, "I don't
know" or worse, they don't know that they don't know.

Bruce summed it up best when he said, "You need new pimply-faced gurus".

How frequently are you updating your history file, or whatever
alternative mechanism your engine uses to optimize its fetch
profile?
