Howdy,
Gonna keep it short; hopefully.

Last October I posted regarding being forced by a third party vendor to migrate from
our perfectly good 3k to a DEC, HP 9k or a SUN Alpha. My problem was twofold:
a) which one b)what size. Quite a number of people responded, mostly privately,
and each one asked that I post the progress. So here I am with results and a
question.

As we are an contracted IS services group most of the stuff you really want to hear
lives under nondisclosure and such, but I can dump a little bit your way. We decided
to stay with HP. The DEC deal was *extremely* attractive but we decided to stay
with a, more or less, know quantity. Here's the matchup:

from a 987, 192 MB memory, 12 GB disc, 5.5 GB image database, 2 DDS-II tape + 1 DDS-I
tape to :

HP9000 K460, 1GB memory, 44 GB disc array + 4 GB internal disc, the DDS-II internal tape
plus 1 DLT, CDROM and other stuff I don't remember. Oracle database. Welllll....yeah
that may be a bit excessive for now but I had to plan for up to 5 years out, plus a good
"bundled" deal from HP.

My question...because of scheduling and a shortage of personnel it looks like I personally
will not be able to go to any kind of formal training. A couple of others are going for basics
but I'm out. So...in a few weeks I'm taking a week off (and my PC) sit at home and
go through Computer Based Training (CBT). I understand that CBT, like the real world,
is heavily dependent upon the source course content (what outfit ya got it from)
but am *really* interested in views, good or bad, from anyone who has been through
this sort of an experience. As CBT is spreading rapidly a posting to the list may be
of value, however I'm willing to take what I can get.

Y'all have a good one,
