The annoying thing about the alt-tab (vanilla version, which I think you get
back to in XP by right clicking inside the "busy" alt-tab box), is that it
helpfully changes the position of your open applications, moving latest
selected to the right.

Alt-TAB still toggles back and forth between two applications for me on my
XP system, so there must be an option somewhere that makes it behave
differently for you.

This feature is called "CoolSwitch." The registry settings for it are in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop.
