It might be worthwhile for you to post the details (specifications) of
the master dataset in question.  I am sure some people would opine on
the best capacity.  However, if it's just the case of letting the
dataset get near capacity, then that's another story.

 Thanks to all who responded - it was a matter of master datasets (I
increased to capacities today - took me almost 6 hours of sweat and the
performance is back again).

I will do a deeper analysis on the database (secondaries etc) over the
weekend.

It is STILL a pleasure to turn to this list for help.
