First off thanks to all who replied and to all those who
offered their technical services for hire. Unfortunetly this
business isn't willing to spend money on important things like
training or equipment. That's the fault of the owner and General
Manager. To them this is just the tech department and we do with
what we are provided as best we can.
I know that offends many people in the industry to hear stuff
like that especially in such a "mission-critical" situation such
as ours. But that's out of my hands...
 Anyways,
I didn't mean to sound upset with my job or my employer. I
actually love my job and anything to do with computers or
programming.
It is however a little daunting being promoted to such a
resposible position with only a pep talk and a week to play
around, then before my first week on the job a drive fails.
We had a regualr admin who was a hp wiz. When he moved to
florida I was tapped to fill his spot becuse I was the only one
in the office who showed interest in learning HP stuff since I
started here a few months ago. Thankfully my boss knows me from
before I started here and knows I'm a quick lerner, very
reliable, and I won't let him down.

They "had" a full complete back up that runs every friday
night. And a partial back up of customer data every night. I'm
not sure which program they use exactly. I know the command is
store *t;@[log in to unmask]@;show or somewhere there bouts...
Well after our drive was reinstalled we restored the friday
tape only to find out it wasn't @[log in to unmask]@ it was only @[log in to unmask] I
guess before I got here a few years ago there was a problem with
the back up and they changed it for a while to only cstdata and
someone forgot to change it back. This is the first failure they
have had since 2000. We went through the catalog of back-up
tapes till we found the most recent complete tape. Then we
restored from that tape(11/01/00), and then did a cstdata
restore from last mondays tape to bring our system up to date.
We also had to contact some of our software vendors to get our
dbase and adeger set up right..
Now that that's all complete I've made a new cslt tape, and
complete backup, and monday night ran our cstdata backup tape as
normal. Now if this ever happens again we're prepared for a
reinstall. As for hardware that's up to HP. We have a 3 hour
on-site service contract with HP for hardware and software. Why
they choose to do the reinstall over the phone I'm not sure...

I know this is very long, sorry about that. I have to get back
to work i'll finish what else I had to say later,

Much appriciated,
Gehan Gehale
