Gavin clarifies.....
In case you haven't read any of the articles...
/snip/
The fact that the whole thing happened at all is more humorous than
annoying. I suspect someone in the compiler lab got "cute" and then
showed the result to someone in marketing who couldn't resist writing
a press release about it. I doubt that the activity was in any way
prompted or condoned by people higher up (although how much
pressure was being placed on the compiler lab to "beat Intel/Microsoft"
would be interesting to know).

Interesting that Gavin mentions the marketing dept....
I have little doubt that's what happened.

I had the (dis)pleasure of working for a company that let the marketing
folks ride roughshod over the I.T. group. It didn't matter that we said we
couldn't possibly complete the project in the time allotted, they expected it
to be done. A favorite phrase was "You don't really need to test that
much, do you?"

Unfortunately, management backed the people who were selling the
company's services, so we had to further reduce our contact with the
outside world, drink more beer, and post more "stupid management"
cartoons.

Clients, of course, were thrilled with programs that were late and didn't
work as advertised. Guess who got blamed? And management
wondered why our morale was so low.

A couple of us ex-employees were talking about them the other day and
are convinced that they are working on a way to extend the deadline of
the year 2000 project instead of working on it, since they have more
important things to do.

Gary Groves, do you know who I'm talking about??????
