Yeah, I remember that conference. I was chairman of that one also. It was
the largest ever HP World and I think it was rated as #2 or #3 computer
conference in the country by some magazine. Computerworld?

Oh my ! The first HP Conference I ever attended was HPWorld '99 in San
Francisco. Seems I'm a very young pup, after all. I remember meeting some of
you guys there ! See, how time flies ! I was one of the youngest ones back
then, and now I'm close to retirement.

Hello HP3000-L,

40 years ago today, on March 24, 1989, I opened the 1983 HP3000 IUG
Conference in Montréal, Canada. The conference was held at the Queen
Elizabeth Hotel and the adjoining Sheraton Center and ran from the 24 to the
29th.

The opening get together was held at the QE hotel on Sunday, 24th April and
was hosted by Hewlett Packard.

On Tuesday evening, we bused the participants to a sugaring-off party in a
nearby sugar shack.

On Wednesday, the keynote address was delivered by Dr. Isaac Asimov.

On Thursday evening, the conference banquet was held at the Olympic Stadium.
The participants went by Metra to the stadium using tickets that we printed
for the occasion. I believe this was the first time the Metro system
accepted tickets that were printed for the occasion by the event itself.

The vendor Exhibit was in the QE hotel. It was MUCH smaller in those early
days.

We produced a swap type on site, in the hastily assembled computer room in
one of the conference rooms of the hotel, in which we rolled in an HP3000
Series 33, with printer and tape drive.

The technical sessions were held at QE convention level, with overflow
sessions at the adjoining Sheraton.

The conference committee:

Myself as conference chair.

Myer Kwavnick as vice-chair.

Jim “Fairch” Fairchild as conference manager.

Hank Van Leeuwen – Technical papers chair

Helene Quimper – Vendors Exhibits

Linda Black – Computer System Manager

Sandi Kwavnick – Publications

Eric Billington – Audio-Visual

Henri Koelblen – Special Events

Madeleine Paradis – Special Events

Anscar Mantel – Security

Gerry Johnson – Swap tape

Lana Farmery – IUG BoD liaison

After decades of moves and storage, all I have left of this event are a
cube, a few badges, and a copy of the conference guide.
