How Hewlett-Packard/Agilent Technologies "reinvented" work

Can technology companies really create a better work/life balance and still
remain productive?

The Work in America Institute contends that they can.

And to prove its point, last year the institute issued a 195-page report,
"Holding a Job, Having a Life: Strategies for Change," by Jill Casner-Lotto,
which includes 13 case studies from both private and public companies that
have managed to make a difference.

As part of our month-long Pervasive Workplace series, we've obtained
permission to make available a case study on Hewlett-Packard/Agilent
Technologies as a download. Titled "Hewlett-Packard/Agilent Technologies:
Linking Business Challenges and Work/Life Needs Through 'ReInventing Work,'"
this case study shows that it is possible for technology companies to
achieve a better work/life balance.

Though the case study focuses on divisions other than IT, it deals with the
same issues faced by technology professionals every day:
Peer pressure to work past midnight
High burnout rates
Unused vacation time
Policies that require employees to be on call, even during their time off
The full report also includes additional case studies and outlines methods
companies can use to create a better work/life balance within their own work
environments.

"The report demonstrates how work/life integration can improve organization
performance in such areas as recruitment, retention, employee commitment,
productivity, and customer service," Casner-Lotto writes in the report's
introduction. "For employees, the benefits have included increased
flexibility, reduced workloads and stress levels, and more free time for
family, community, and recreational activities."

It will only be available on TechRepublic through the end of May, so
download it now! (The report is also available for purchase online, by
e-mailing [log in to unmask] or calling 914-472-9600.)
