Not an explanation, just an experience.

I recently reloaded our MPE 6.0 machine.  I issued the following commands
to STORE and RESTORE:

:STORE @.PUB.SYS, @[log in to unmask]@.PUB.SYS, @[log in to unmask]@[log in to unmask]@.SYS;*TP;DIRECTORY

Then after the INSTALL

:RESTORE *TP;@.PUB.SYS, @[log in to unmask]@.PUB.SYS, @[log in to unmask]@[log in to unmask]@.SYS;DIRECTORY;KEEP

As best as I can tell, all files (MPE and HFS) were restored.  I've been
using the POSIX shell with no problems since the reload.

Maybe it succeeded since I used the 'DIRECTORY' option.
