Hmmmmmm...
I have tried running smbclnt both online and in batch, and examined the
redirected and saved output. It all looks very respectable - no strange
characters at all. Maybe it was an earlier version of Samba/iX (this one
is Version 1.9.16p9).
So perhaps the problem (at least from Samba client) has disappeared.
