Consider this!

We had a similar conundrum in 92/93. We had a 955 (similar horsepower
to 937). Cognos (and other software vendors as well) wanted to 'rape'
us for the privilege of moving our development Powerhouse licence to a
987 - no more users or developers. At the time we also needed to
purchase a COBOL compiler from HP. They also wanted to to the same on pricing.

We bought a 917 for development + NS (which we were going to anyway),
put development Powerhouse and COBOL compiler on the 917 and still
saved money. The ongoing maintenance costs for the 917 are minimal, and
Networking is now free!

I have not investigated recently, however with user based licencing on
boxes, S/W vendors may now be coming to the party as well. We can live in hope.

We were fortunate we only had a small number of developers, as a 917 is
only 8 user. You may want to think about a strategy along these lines
for your Powerhouse problem!

Subject: Current 3000 hardware?
Date: Thursday, 3 October 1996 5:51

My current client has a 937 and a 947. They have decided to stick with the
3000 for awhile longer, but need more horsepower. Their thought is to dump
the 937 and get a "987". This is the part where I'm confused.

Does HP still sell 987's new, or would this have to be purchased
remanufactured, or from a third-party vendor? (I checked the info on Jazz;
it looks like the 987's are no longer available from HP.)

Is this even a wise choice at this point? Would a 9x8 box (or later) be a
"better" choice?

As PowerHouse 7.x is the primary development environment, would it be best
to approach Cognos first to see how much box we can afford?

TIA for your wisdom and experience!
