We might get a bit further with HP if we talked about accepting an
upgrade to OpenMail ported with the Posix interface to MPE, as a
investment protection for the cost of Desk. It could at least be an
"trade-in" credit. OpenMail already supports several different Unix
varieties (HPUX, AIX, SUN) - why not Posix? With a Posix version, they
could even put it on an AS/400. They are almost done with the NT port,
so why not keep those porting programmers busy?

Please don't that this as criticism of Desk. We've used and appreciated
Desk for many years. The Desk client GUI for Windows has brought new
interest in it, but users miss the calendar. Nonetheless, OpenMail is
very successful for HP and appears to be evolving nicely (if only they
would add support for a database for the message store - but, of course,
that would be expensive), so why can't we have it on MPE/iX, too? (What
good is posix if it doesn't even attract HP's software developers to
MPE?)
