I've done this a couple of times as well, and you are right about the time
saving.  IIRC, the program is COPYUTIL and it is found inside ODE.  Most
systems have had ODE loaded up at some point so chances are it is there.

When the program opens up it reads the config and assigns its own numbers to
all devices.  Your disc ldev 3 might be #4 and your tape drive might be #22.
These numbers are unique each time the program opens up.  I've done a copy
from a 4gig disc to DLT drive in 20 minutes.  By that time HP arrived,
swapped the bad disc, we did a copy from tape back to disc (another 20
minutes), and rebooted.  Whole thing took about an hour.

Same system was reloaded a number of months later and it took two days, but
that's a different and far uglier story full of backup validation reminders
and other nasty things like that.

If your just having a single drive replaced (and it's not ldev 1) then you
don't need to do a reload. You HP CE should have a program they can load
either from the CD Rom or from the tapedrive that will copy the contents of
one drive to tape. They can then replace the drive and copy the tape back
onto the disk. Then you restart your system. I've had to have this done
several times and it works fine, and is much MUCH faster than doing a
reload.
