X-To: Mark Klein,
Thank you, I would not have succeeded if not for your kind help.
(I'm going to share this with the comp.sys.hp.mpe newsgroup)
1) The first step which made the perl5.003 install partially successful
was to get the *.sl libraries built in the /usr/local/lib/xl
directory
by using the
-rwxrwxr-x 1 MANAGER.SYS 0 1664 Sep 26 07:29
LIBS.hp3000
(kornshell script)
which came in the perl5.003 distribution.
I ran this script from an MPE group(directory) because I had a
problem with
the
script using STDIN.
2) Then I moved the appropriate *.sl directories to the appropriate lib
directories
/lib /usr/lib
3) Next I ran the following perl5.003 install install scripts
-rwxrwxr-x 1 MANAGER.SYS 0 11959 Sep 26 07:30
installperl
(perl5 script)
-rwxrwxr-x 1 MANAGER.SYS 0 5783 Sep 26 07:30
installman
(perl5 script)
which came with your per5.003 distribution
4) Put a copy of perl5.003 in my /usr/local/bin directory with a
symbolic link
to perl
lrwxrwxrwx 1 MANAGER.SYS 0 24 Sep 26 11:57 perl ->
/usr/local/bin/perl5.003
-rwxrwxr-x 1 MANAGER.SYS 0 1317376 Feb 20 1997 perl5.002
-rwxrwxr-x 1 MANAGER.SYS 0 1144576 Sep 26 11:18 perl5.003
Thanks again Mark, for all your GNU porting!!!

Mark Klein also wanted me to add his thoughts to this post.
"Would you also please make a note that these instructions are for
the Perl5.003 contained in a MOVER file and is the one that works on
MPEiX
5.0 and 5.5 (but doesn't support dynamic loading of modules)? The
Perl5.003
contained in the FREEWARE distribution is the DynaLoader version that
only
works for MPEiX 5.5 and has different installation instructions."
Best Wishes
Joe
