Thanks for all your replies. We tried them all and nothing worked, so we
had to bring the system down and back up. Someone had entered a file
equation to a device from the console and misspelled it. The session seemed
to become hung after he pressed return.

Often just a <ctl>-Q will do it, or just hitting return.
