Okay, I must be partially warped too.  My first answer was 7, but by second
answer was broccoli.  Well, actually the second answer was tomato, but a
fraction of a second later I remembered that a tomato is a fruit, not a
vegetable.

As for the first problem, I'm not sure why I approached it this way, but I
distinctly remember thinking "between 12 and 5, oh! a difference of 7, and
7 is between 12 and 5, so it (7) will do as an answer".  Why I immediately
thought of subtracting, I don't know.
