Thanks Denys, exactly what I wanted to know.

Still weighing the effort/benefit of it all. I don't have a C/iX
compiler. But then what about GNU?

I wonder if anyone has a small snippet of code (any language) that has
all the "SCSI changer commands and status inquiries" in it?
I don't want to develop a marketable product, just want to make
something that will work for the School District.

Thanks again.

So many questions. So little time. :)

Yes, each DLT tape drive will have its own Ldev. Also, you will need
to
have a FWSCSI port for each tape drive, with nothing else on the SCSI
chain, excepting the robotic controller on one of them. The robotic
controller will also have its own Ldev. The SYSGEN entry for that
device will have "Picker" or some MO robot entry if you are pre-6.5,
which I see you are.

The robot controller will use the 6th SCSI driver in MPE, and it is
really not a driver per se, it is a SCSI-passthrough driver. This
means
it takes whatever you send it and passes it directly to the device.
In
turn, it will get whatever the device sends back and will pass that to
you as well.

You do not necessarily need a technical manual for the 130T, though it
would be nice to have. Rather, what you need is a SCSI command 2/3
manual to figure out how to write SCSI changer commands and status
inquiries. You will also need a manual to show you how to use a few
undocumented, privileged mode procedures to talk to the robot. I
would
recommend you write it in C, but that's just me.

Once you have all that, you're cooking with gas.

Denys

Okay, I assume when connected that each DTL (all 4) will have a
separate
LDEV#, correct?

The real question is; How will software address the robotic portion of
this device, LDEV# also?

I use the standard STORE.PUB.SYS, an execute a full backup every
night,
and it always fits on one tape. However, to develop a tight/problem
free
process I try to avoid terms like "never" and "always", instead I like
to ask "What If?". So I already have another job that runs parallel to
the backup that knows when the backups needs another tape. Sometimes
the
backup is unable to write to the current tape, and this other job will
let me know using a text msg to my mobile phone, email to my desktop,
and the old msg to the console. So then; Theocratically (if the above
questions are both 'YES') it should be trivial to modify my other job
NOT to send all these msg's everywhere, but instead write the
appropriate command to the PowerVault robot, instructing it to change
tapes.

So, anyone know what those commands would be, or where I might find a
technical reference manual for this PowerVault 130T.

The Powervault 130T is an HVD device which can certainly be connected
to
a 979. It has up to 30 slots and up to 4 DLT tape drives. You will
need
some type of software to drive the library robot itself. Once the
tape(s) is (are) loaded in the drive(s), any backup product can be
used.
Of course, if the backup goes beyond one tape, your backup software
will
have to swap out the tapes.

It seems to be a nice little library, so you should try to use it.

What is needed to connect a Dell PowerVault 130T DLT Tape Library
(maybe
made by Quantum) to a HP3000/979?

This machine is running M.P.E 6.0 pp2
It's already got a DLT7000 drive.

PowerVault is on it's way to FA, unless I can use it on our M.P.E box.
