Ahh, yes, the 7933 head wire problem, if I recall correctly. We
suffered through one failure before proactive replacement of other
heads.
We had a blatant head crash on a 7933 (maybe 7925, been awhile) once.
Field CE found a residue on our media and suggested someone had "spilled
a drink" on the top of the drive and leakage dripped onto the surface
of the disk. First we don't allow food/drink in the machine room, and
second we had trustworthy operators [at least at the time :-)]. We were
billed for time/materials, media, heads, a sizeable figure. The boss
protested. Several weeks later after analysis of the disk, the film
residue on the platter was found to be a lubricant native to the drive
itself. But as far as I know this was a unique incident.
But let's get back to the PP5 issue. If this is a matter of simply
identifying the offending patch, then by all means. PP5 brings many
wonderful things to our eagerly awaiting hands, but if there is a bad
apple in there, we can certainly forgive that, provided you point out
the bad apple :-)
