Planning is essential here! TIA568 uses pins 1-2 and 3-6 for 10BaseT
connections. If you choose some serial scheme using 4-5 and 7-8 for
serial you can avoid any "accidental" mismatches - anything mismatched
is talking to a dead line. But be wary of various wiring schemes,
ethernet, token ring, ISDN, etc., have standard pinouts; serial pin
assignments over RJ45 weren't quite so lucky though there are some
obvious standards. At any rate, try to avoid matching live wires of
dislike end devices.
