I never used that "hide dot files" option so far, but when I look
at my personal share via \\my3000\lars.appel (using [homes] section
in smb.conf) it seems that .profile and friends do show up on the
PC, but with File Properties showing the "hidden" flag set.

So maybe "hide" does not mean "hide from client" but "tell client
that hidden attribute is set". Just a thought, final evidence might
be only in the Samba source code...
