It's obvious that Wirt was known by a very large number of people, both
here in the electronic medium, as well as many other circles. It always
amazed me just how many different things Wirt was both involved in as
well as a respected contributor. For me, he was always available to
listen to my thoughts and offer his perspective. We worked together on
a number of occasions, for he too, gave unselfishly of his time and
resources in support of the HP3000, or what ever his friends needed. He
also supported my wife with her teaching her classes, as well as my kids
in some of their projects.
Over the more than 28 years I've known and worked with him, there was
never anything pretentious about him, for he was both genuine and open.
Even if you disagreed and Wirt wasn't able to convince you that he was
correct, you knew that he still respected and would listen to what you
had to offer. He was also open to what others had to offer and would
come over to your side if he felt that you had a better answer.
I'd been to his and Valarie's place several times, and have some fond
memories of enjoying enchiladas with them, Alfredo Rego, Rene Woc, Fred
White, Steve Cooper, Stan Sieler, Ken Sletten, Janet/Ken Nutsford, and a
host of other ol' timers. Perhaps my fondest memory was traveling to
Sun Valley and working together with Wirt in the Adager labs in
actually devising then conducting a means of proving the benefits of
Critical Item Update in IMAGE, dispelling any doubt that others cast
over this fundamental change to IMAGE. He was passionate about IMAGE
and it's importance to the user community, not just in what he said, but
also in what he did, and it showed to all who met him. He even helped
out the kids in my wife's elementary class on occasion, as well as our
own kids, giving freely of his time and talent.
There is now a big void in my circle of dear friends that I've loved,
respected and admired over the years.
Wirt, I can't say that I agree with this method of getting in the last
word, but rest peacefully my friend...
