(Rant On)

We have run into a difficult situation trying to purchase an additional New
HP3000 which we thought the group should be aware of. We are an HMO
currently running 2 HP3000's, one production box and one development machine
(which is more and more becoming a production box!). Last fall during our
budget cycle we obtained quotes for an additional 3rd HP3000 at approx
$350K. The budget was approved and early this month we set out to obtain
current quotes from 2 vars we usually deal with and from McKesson HBOC as
our contract with them (as our AMISYS vendor) gives them first right of
refusal.

HBOC's quote came back at approx 50% above the budgetary quote we had used.
The 2 vars did not provide quotes. When questioned further they disclosed
that they were unable to get quotes from Client Systems (the only vendor for
new HP3000 systems) because of our relationship with HBOC.

After discussions with the vars, Client Systems, HBOC, and HP we have
learned that HP as set a policy that if the application vendor is a channel
partner then they get preference for quoting the system. The other vars
are told they can quote but that HBOC will have the right to lodge a
complaint with HP's channel partner compliance group and the sale could be
withdrawn.

As you can see, this means that we are held hostage to paying the higher
price to purchase the system from the application vendor which, or course,
our budget won't accommodate. Thus forcing us to the resale market.

So.....wanted you all to be aware of the lack of competitive price shopping
you will be able to do if you want a new HP3000 .

(Rant Off)

If you know of any available HP3000 969's or 997's let me know
