Subject: [HP3000-L] AS400

Hi all,

Any one know of a list for the AS400 similar to this list? I've already
looked into [log in to unmask], but it's a bit bureaucratic (you send
a question, and you get an auto answer stating that your question is being
reviewed for proper discussion...). [...]44_19Sep200211:09:[log in to unmask]

I'm in contact with the IBM iSeries people. They are having a separate
gathering at 6:30 on Wednesday. Additionally, I'm using some of their WOW!
technology in my Migration talks. The session "Porting COBOL VPLUS and
IMAGE Apps to UNIX, Linux or Windows" will now include the iSeries. BTW,
you can run UNIX, Linux and Windows on an iSeries! IBM is loaning me an
iSeries for my talks.

Speaking of the session, it is now in two parts. Part I at the oriiginally
scheduled 3PM Wednesday will be heavily laced with examples of what you can
do with ported applications once you get them to a platform with modern
tools. We are going to show such things as Webfacing, JDBC access, J2ee
adapters, and really slick development enviroments centered around IBM's
Websphere technologies and other JAVA based tools. The intent is to show
what happens if you port to a platform with a lot of capability. With some
of the tools IBM has and the DB2 almost anyone can immediately start
developing Web, e-commerece and client/server applications. We want to
drive the point home using real tools that you can get today. Moreover, we
want to show that HP 3000 professionals can use this tragedy of the
discontinuance of MPE as an opportunity to leverage their company to a
desirable technology and themselves into a brighter future in terms of
skills.

Part II, which is on Thursday morning at 8AM will include a more indept
coverage of porting applications to the various platforms and technical
considerations therein. I have also managed to borrow an IBM indexing
expert named Amy Anderson co-author of "Indexing Strategies for DB2 UDB for
iSeries" who will show how advanced indexing features such as those provided
by Omnidex or Superdex are already included in DB2 (which is bundled in with
the iSeries).

I am a long time M.P.E. professional, since 1983.
On 11/14/01 HP decided to DROP it's own Flagship platform, the HP3000.
What other systems offer the same stability, scalability, reliability,
support, and a World-Class DBMS as part of the OS. Being an HP3000
professional you know the requirements for mission critical business
application platforms, and M.P.E. is exactly what meets these demands.
Looking all throughout the IT industry where is another platform like
this one. Only thing I can see is Windows, and all the various flavors
of Unix. If we don't get OpenMPE to fly, then the only thing that comes
close to what the HP3000 is, is the iSeries (formerly AS/400) from IBM.
IBM can offer the same stability, scalability, reliability, support, and
a World-Class DBMS (Not as good as Image) but is part of the OS. They
have a booth at HPW, don't they? We may give them a spot at our RUG
show.It took a tight group to get Linux to fly, and Linux is just
another Unix OS, only, it's Open Source. How much effort is going to
take to M.P.E. to be Open Source? --
