Boy, do I just hate when I do stupid stuff! :-(

The problem turned out to be a misconfigured IP address on the LJ4050N. 
I would have sworn that it was right (I even have a printout showing 
the correct IP address), but somewhere in the configuration process 
I wiped out the first part of the IP address.  Fixed that and voila! 
A WAN printer!  Thanks for all the responses and sorry for the 
trouble.
