Bill,

If I understand the whole process, the bottom line is you want to take a
spoolfile, generated on your e3000, and print it on your Unix box, correct?
If that is the case why don't you lo into "lpr/lpd"? This feature of
NBSpool allows you to "move" an MPE spoolfile directly to a Unix print queue
without all the intermediate steps.

Thanx,
        Jon

Subject: Re: [HP3000-L] how to convert SPOOL file to regular file, for
FTP to Unix?

Hi John.

Thanks for your message. I have tried using TEXT and KEEP, and seem to be
getting closer.

I called TEXT on my spool file, and then tried the following eight
variations of the KEEP command:

   O> keep bt1;rec=auto
   O> keep bt2;rec=auto;nocctl

   O> keep bt3;rec=auto;expand
   O> keep bt4;rec=auto;expand;nocctl

   O> keep bt5;rec=auto,,,binary
   O> keep bt6;rec=auto,,,binary;nocctl

   O> keep bt7;rec=auto,,,binary;expand
   O> keep bt8;rec=auto,,,binary;expand;nocctl

I believe I am getting closer-- what I have found is that with all these
varients, if I FTP the file in ASCII mode, I get much better PCL. It now
prints properly, except for one problem: and extra formfeeds are inserted,
causing the print output from a single page to get divided over two pages.
(This happens for every page in the job.) Very strange. I am digging
around some more, but thought I would check to see if you or anyone else
reading this list/group had any thoughts.

thanks again for your help.

PS-- the different versions of this keep command create output files with
slightly different sizes-- but I am not detecting any difference in the
actual printed output. Also-- they all behave in the same way, in that
FTPing them in binary mode corrupts them, FTPing them in ascii mode give me
a print file which is almost perfect, save for the problem described above.
