It is possible to 'replace' or 'add' datasets to databases as you are
asking about.  However, there are some problems matching up the root
file as you suspect.  Defining a new dataset with a database utility
and then replacing the dataset will work, *if*
 
  1)    your new file (eof, flimit, cap, etc) is the same as the old
                file, and you can change the current entry values in
                the old file, or
 
  2)    you can change all the information in the root file to match
                the old file.
 
I would suggest number 1, if you have a tool that will change this
information.  If you don't, I would NOT suggesting doing this yourselve.
