How about
ACCESS FILE1 LINK TO RECORD 0 OF DETAIL-FILE  &
  LINK XXXXX OF DETAIL-FILE TO SOMETHING-ELSE
 
This will build the whole complex, but will save disk reads on
DETAIL-FILE.
