This limitation has caused me to scrap using SAMBA on the 3000 for anything
but the simplest applications. I had hoped HP would allow us to override
their abitrary limitation from the HFS, a limitation that has caused many
headaches over the years, but they still refuse to do so.

There is a way around this problem, but having SAMBA sign on to a SM account
is just a little to dangerous for my taste.
