Finally sorted, thanks to all who added their bits.


On MPE system in mpe,

/usr/local/bin/gzip    FILENAME -produces a FILENAME.gz, of ~ 10% original size

In windows in ftp

Get ./FILENAME.gz


Then in Windows

Gzip -d -a -f FILENAME.gz


Then I am renaming them to .txt files. I know it could be domemore succinctly, but this works and is easy to follow for others.

Yes it purges the original file in the process (uncompress will bring it
back).

Yes you can FPT the Z file, typical example of a put from the host:

BINARY
PUT ./EXIM.DBF.Z

Funny, my version of Winzip sees them just fine.

Attached graphic shows the Icon it uses.
