"modems" in general, and "laptop modems" in particular have been
"winmodems" for years now [ask any Linux Geek...] A "winmodem", or
"soft" modem as the GS guy called it, is essentially nothing more than a
CPU controlled tone generator, and all the "modem"-ing is done in
software using the power of your CPU rather than a dedicated/discrete
chipset to do the work. Can you guess the price of "parts" compared to
what you actually /paid/ for said "modem"?

Well, since HE suggested it, I would take the laptop to the store and
have him navigate/download/install said "freely available upgrade" ON
HIS DIME AND TIME. Offhand I don't know how Best buy's "geeksquad"
prices their work (is it a flat per-incident fee, or some sort of hourly
arrangement?) If it is per-incident, you certainly can make the case
that this is the same "incident" and you are not, as yet, satisfied with
the results.
