That's news to me. Thanks!. -z (or just z) is not supported on hp-ux
9.05 according to man and actual usage.

Agreed. However when 6.0 hits the streets as a push release we will have two
releases of MPE with a functioning tar. At this point it seems ok to me to
stop the use of mover for all new archives. Probably the older archives
will remain in mover format since that is the path of least resistance.
So, yes the problem will remain for the old archives but new instances of
the problem will not occur. No matter what fommat we choose as a
replacemenmt for mover the old problem will remain for as long as there
are old mover archives.

This is a good idea. If I remember correctly from the construction of
the FREEWARE tape there are other incompatibilies between 5.0 and 5.5 tar.
