Ok. Let's first fix the nomenclature. What you refer to LUN is actually a
SCSI target ID or SCSI address. The system supports Fast (Narrow) SE SCSI,
which means that it supports addresses from 0 to 7. Under no circumstances
would I add the new drive on the ribbon cable with the existing drives. I
would place it in an enclosure and connect it outside.

The new drive is an Ultra SCSI drive meaning that it is an LVD SCSI and is
Wide SCSI. You will need to have some sort of converter from Wide to
Narrow, usually that is a cable or an adapter has you have used. You want
to make sure that high-bit termination is enabled somehow.

I am looking at the HP web site for information on this drive, and as usual,
I find very little information on these older drives. I will continue to
search.

Thanks Denys,

Here is the physical layout from left to right along the ribbon
cable:

HDD ---- HDD ---- DDS ---- NEWDRIVE ---- > to scsi ctrl and BP.

The two HDD are FH 5.25" ST15150N with LUNs of 6 and 5 respectively.
The DDS is an HPC1537A with a LUN of 0

The new drive is a HP/ComPaq HB01831B95 with an 80 to 50 pin adapter
attached. The adapter is jumpered for a LUN of 2. There are no
jumpers visible on the drive itself. The adapter has jumpers to set
the LUn between 0 and 15 and has four pin pairs labelled MTR (RMT-
Start), DLY (Start Delay), SYN (Synchronous), and LED, none of which
are shorted.

The drive powers up and the cable connectors seem firmly seated to
their maximum depth in the sockets. ODE MAPPER does not see the
drive at all.

No sysgen entries have been made for this device. Well, actually they
were but I must not have saved them the first time through.

Regards,
Jim
