I know, but I thought hundreds of people would jump to the
opportunity to share their experiences in these areas. So,
I decided to write about my (minority?) observations on
other (more obscure?) happenings :-)

>Seems like it still is the same as in San Jose.

I agree. The changes seem to be incremental, rather than
world-shaking.

>Anybody made the migration yet?

I attended a "Successful Migrations" panel (or round table?) chaired
by Alvina Nishimoto and George Stachnik. (BTW, Alvina and George
have worked very hard and they have come up with all kinds of nice
migration programs and promotions to help MPE-Image users as much
as possible, fighting with all their might to overcome HP Corporate
constraints having to do with "legal" and "accounting" and so on.)

Three gentlemen shared their success stories. Two of them had
Speedware-based applications (which they were able to migrate easily
to HP-UX, a while back apparently) and the third had been one of the
very few Oracle users on the hp3000. He mentioned that his original
budget (US$ eleven million or so and some small number of years) had
ended up doubling (somebody else can perhaps provide the exact
numbers). All three gentlemen were very happy with the result. All
three gave the impression that they had started a few years BEFORE
the 11/14 announcement, because they had had the foresight to have
seen the "writing on the wall".

Can Alvina and/or George please expand?

>Who, if any, helped?

HP seems to have been the primary contractor for the Oracle user.
Speedware was probably involved in the Speedware cases. Again, I
would hope that the Speedware folks will provide further details.

>Any experience with the results from HP-INDIA?

I would defer to HP on this one.

Winston must have been in a very optimistic mood :-)

>That is the update I am looking for.

You represent thousands of MPE-Image colleagues in this regard.

We are all looking for the big "Aha!"

Something I forgot to mention is that I attended some high-caliber
TECHNICAL presentations. One was Duane Percox's talk on migrating
to Linux. He did an unbelievable amount of research and he presented
his results extremely fairly (with Linux's great advantages and great
warts). Unfortunately, there were only a *very* few (as in "handful")
people in attendance. Interex seems to measure talks by the number
of attendees (the "best" talk, using this "metric", was undoubtedly
Carly's, because there were people lining up, four-abreast, in a
VERY loooooooooooooong line). I also went to a talk by one of HP's
Itanium-chip engineers (I was happy to see my MPE buddy Mark Bixby
there). I love deep-down bits-and-bytes material and this talk was
very nicely done. Unfortunately, it appears that the same handful of
people who attended Duane's talk went to this also-superb session.

Given the "decaying ecosystem" orientation, I am afraid they will
cancel all of these out-of-the-ordinary and supremely outstanding
talks from the program.

Sigh,
