Hi Bill,
The Monterey Bay Canyon drops off to just about 12000 feet, but the
steep drop off begins several miles offshore. A tsunami though, would have a
devastating effect on the coastal areas in Monterey Bay proper as they are
essentially flat.

MBARI(Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) located in Moss landing
has many facts and maps of the Monterey Bay and can be reached at:
http://mbari.org/data/mapping/mapping.htm.

Subject: [HP3000-L] OT: Tsunami and Diego Garcia

I was reading tonight that a shallow depth really negates the
destructiveness of the tsunami - Bengladesh has along most of its coast a
very shallow depth going out many miles - thus they had very little damage.
I guess from the cnn article Diego Garcia does, too. Or that's what **they**
want you to think ;-)

OTOH I'm thinking of Monterey on our coast where just a few 100' off shore
is a 3000' deep trench...I guess the Great White Shark at the Monterey
Aquarium would again be free ;-)

OT: Tsunami and Diego Garcia

Paul Christidis writes

While I make it a point to avoid 'OT:' subjects, I thought that I'll turn
to the collective wisdom of the list to, perhaps, satisfy my curiosity.

In the middle of the Indian ocean there is an island (an atoll actually)
named Diego Garcia where we (the US) have a naval base. While the average
ground elevation of the site is around 4 feet, the tsunami's impact on
Diego Garcia has not been mentioned in the news. We know that the tidal
wave reached all the way to Africa and the Arabian peninsula (which are
further away than Diego Garcia). Is the apparent 'silence' due to the
fact that no damage occurred or the fact that we are dealing with a
military base?
