I tried it once and I retreated because of these issues:

1) "From the Windows taskbar" says it all ;-)

WRQ's RVD lives in its own independent window, which you can
resize and configure to your heart's content.

2) "Up to four desktops" says even more ;-)

Just for kicks, I configured WRQ's RVD for 100 virtual
desktops. No sweat. You can also configure as many
columns as you like (I happen to like ONE column but,
as Tom mentioned, one person's chaff is another person's
wheat). Hey, you can even configure RVD's window to be
the total size of your physical screen ;-)

[and if so, how much?] [ok, I think I can answer part of that myself -- it seems "RVD", as they call it, was part of the "supplemental apps" that shipped with various products; getting a copy "today", however, may be nigh on impossible as they state that the product is generally discontinued, mature, or obsolete (and oddly enough, not supported past 10.x on XP)]

If you are nice to the WRQ marketing folks, they might (just *might*)
find a way to help you out.

BTW, Tom, you may be interested in (or, at least, in the specs for)

Ah... Toys, toys. They can be great productivity aids or they
can be tremendous time sinks.

Enjoy,
