It can be passed to a subroutine.  I've had to do it.

I cannot imagine doing any of those things. Well, maybe I might need to pass
the
FD to a subroutine, and offhand, I do not know whether the FD can be passed
in a
parameter list.

As for computing (calculating?) or setting, neither of these, to my
knowledge
can be done with the return of FOPEN.
