5.5 eh? A little less drastic than a reboot (but only a little), you can
stop all network services (using NSCONTROL STOP followed by NETCONTROL
STOP). This *will* take down all your network-connected users (i.e. those
logged on through NS/VT, not DTC connections). If that doesn't kill it,
well, you're that much closer to rebooting anyway. If it *does* kill it, you
can bring the network back up and let everyone back on without the
additional downtime of a reboot.
I learned this while doing some maintenance work. I inadvertently stopped
network services before aborting the FTPMON job. Now if I skip that ABORTJOB
step I know the dying network will take it down for me anyway.
