For anyone who might still be tracking problems with
HP 2GB disc drives:

After several years of being lucky, we just had one of
four 2 GB discs in the MPEXL_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET
on our 959KS/200 start to go bad. Predictive noticed
that the disc was starting to get read errors; looking
at the logs with SCSIDSK2 showed four instances of
> 1 retry soft errors; AND one UNRecoverable hard
error (whatever it was; nothing crashed). BTW, this
was LDEV 2....

HP gets an attaboy for doing a good job on Predictive..
... And will continue to get major harrassment from our
site until they implement mirroring of the <long name>.
If this disc would have gone over the edge during day
shift and crashed the system, it would have been *real*
ugly to be down for most or all of a day. Luckily, it hung
in there until we could get HP over to replace it during
slack time on swing shift. And with all user data on
other volume sets, we only had 5.7 million sectors on
the <long name>.

And no, we don't consider the HA disc array a good
alternate solution...  We paid $13K for disc mirroring;
we really don't want to pay another >= $13K for the HA
disc array that has to be in a separate enclosure and
that hangs on one SCSI port and one cable... Besides,
I don't have any more money this FY to make additional
hardware purchases anyway....      :-(

I wrote down all the numbers on the bad disc before
HP carried it away, in case anyone cares what
they are. This disc was manufactured in October 1995:

SYSGEN ID:  HPC2490WD
Model:  C2490A, options 012 and 405
Part number:     5063-5400
Serial number:   3507A84367
Warrantee S/N:  5417A84367
Primary Rev Code:   3541

Plus a few more miscellaneous numbers;
I don't know what they are:

CP9LG   W3030D.09   W13E5193
