Two points to add to your comment:
 
1).  I'm sure that the factory keeps statistics and are aware of any
problems.
But, they will be unlikely to admit a "Class" problem that would require the
replacement of all of the problem disks with a corrected disk.  Its much
easier to replace the drives that fail.  The new self contained disk do not
allow the replacement of components like with the heads on the 7933 drive.
 
2).  When I last checked the drives are only stripped down if demanded
by the customer.  This is usually reserved for irrate customers that have
had multiple failures of a particular device.
