Not exactly.  The requirement to use encrypted passwords is a
[global] section setting, so you can't have some shares require
it while others don't.  What actually happens (this is the 10,000
foot view BTW :) is when you initially connect up, both the client
and server negotiate how they are going to talk to each other.
Once they decide that, they get down to authenticating the client
in one way or another.  If you've enabled plain-text passwords
on the client, all that means is that if the authentication via
encrypted methods fail, as a last resort the client will send
over the unencrypted password to the server.
  So, if you have other SMB servers that your client will connect
up to that do require encrypted passwords, your client will work
fine with them, even if you install the clear-text registry hack.

Yep, you'll need to install the registry hack.
