This is ancient history. It was referred to as "sector atomicity" I believe
and primarily dates from the classic machine era, though HP was still
manufacturing these drives when the 9x7s were new. HP stopped making disk
drives at the time the 9x8s were introduced.

Any firmware HP adds now is only so the drives work with certain diagnostic
tools.
