Hi, Ray;
I've owned a 1990 Jetta GL for a while now and I've researched getting a
new one since the problems I've been having with the old one just keep
mounting. The new line of V-Dub's are excellent cars. The build
quality is truly excellent.
The transmissions on the new Jetta have been outsourced to a Japanese
company but the motor is all German. Excellent fuel economy, especially
the diesel models and the R32 is a rocket. That said, I found the
repair costs to be very high and I'd put parts costs up there with BMW
and AUDI. The thing is that most dealers have access to VW parts
warehouses and can get you nigh anything for any model of VW in a couple
of days, which is amazing.
I mean, my Jetta is 15 years old and I regularly stopeed by the dealer
for replacement fasteners or parts that just plain wore out. My last
experience with the dealer left me very frustrated (and poor) so I'm
hesitant to endorse them, but I'd say just be aware that maintenance
after your warrantee period can be very expensive. And believe me, I
was able to take care of nearly all the maintenance on my Jetta since I
got it (Brakes, Exhaust, Electrical, I replaced the radiator and the
stock cooling fan with an excellent aftermarket unit that was much
better, I put a lot of work into it!) but there are some things that
only the dealer can take care of due to clearance issues under the hood.
The new models are even more tighly packed under the hood now and I
don't think I would tackle doing maintenance on it at home, which is
sad. It was something I really enjoyed.
