It depends on which "old" Laserjet. On a Laserjet Series II, you do the
following.

1) Press offline
2) Press and hold "MENU" button until screen changes to read "SYM SET=xx"
3) Press "MENU" button multiple times until screen reads "I/O = PARALLEL*"
4) Press "+" key multiple times until screen reads "I/O=SERIAL "
5) Press "ENTER" key to place the "*" next to "I/O=SERIAL*". This makes
   this change stick.
6) Press "MENU" button again, this will cycle printer through baud rate,
flow control & DTR polarity. Make changes the same way using #4 and
   #5 above.
7) Anytime you are happy with configs, press online and you are ready to
   go.

For a Laserjet III, the instructions are pretty much the same, except in
#2, the screen changes to "AUTO CONT=xx"

If the Laserjet is any older than that, It's beyond me.
