John we've been working on the Emulator too and had a similar issue about a month ago. We currently use Backpack from ROCsoftware to do our backups. We had to set the mode for the restore to be serial/recover media.

Recover media reads sequentially instead of using file marks. This was explanation from ROC support.

We had to add this option to our Restore.

RESTORE FROM 7 recover media

I've been looking at the standard restore and don't see an option for this. Maybe Craig Lalley or Stan know the option for standard MPE Restore to set that mode.

Hi Stan, et al,

Yes, this was an online backup to an emulated LDEV 7.

The HP3000 thinks it is writing to a tape drive, when in reality it is a Charon/Linux disc drive.

This has been running without a hitch for a few years now.

Then suddenly, it fails.

We are rebooting the HP3000 now to see if that makes a difference.

Will report results after restart.

Thanks for all of the ideas and suggestions so far.

Regards,

John

I'd expect a "file not found" only if the tape was created with some form of ONLINE backup.

Without ONLINE, the directory at the start is enough to tell RESTORE whether or not the file is on the tape.

With ONLINE = END, RESTORE wouldn't know until it hits the end of the storeset if the file was included or not.

I'm with Craig on this - need to see STORE command.

If you don't have a STORE list or command:

You can do VSTORE to create a list of files on the tape

    :FILE T;DEV=7

    :VSTORE *T;@[log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>@;SHOW >km

    :PRINT km

You can also get a listing of the tape with RESTORE and the LISTDIR option.

This also will show the STORE command and date of the store.

    :RESTORE *t;;LISTDIR >km

    :PRINT km

I usually see the NOT FOUND error when I have the name wrong.

Fox 9:restore *t;keven.pub.sys;show

          >> TURBO-STORE/RESTORE VERSION C.60.24 B5152AA <<

                    (C) 1986 HEWLETT-PACKARD CO.

RESTORE *t;keven.pub.sys;SHOW

MON, NOV 4, 2019, 3:30 PM

KEVEN.PUB.SYS NOT RESTORED: FILE NOT FOUND ON MEDIA

FILES RESTORED : 0

FILES NOT ON MEDIA : 1

I would guess that INTERLEAVE and multiple tapes may be at play here.
