Well, I've been testing this drive for about a month.

I've tried cleaning it every day and I use different
tapes every time.

As I got 3 other drives and I only use 2 at any one 
time.  It was a matter of whether it needed a firmware 
call or a hardware call.  

So it looks like a hardware call.

(P.S.  The Sony Cleaning DDS tapes no longer give 
you a check off label for you to remember the 
discard point.  They only provide blank labels like
any other tape.  As this was important to me I'm
not getting any more Sony Cleaning tapes.)
