<hrump> with this script (which is a wrapper for grep) i can hang a
session with little to no difficulty.  so much for 'rarely'....

i should think i have the latest streams patches (since i'm still
actively patching (oh what a concept!)).  this problem has existed for
a long long time...thru several os releases...so patching streams is
not a magic cure.

i guess that's the solution to the problem <sigh>
